The permit is the size of a standard credit card and is made of pink plastic. Accompanied driving instruction (apprentissage anticipé de la conduite, or AAC) can begin as early as age 15, and the practical exam is taken when you are 17 years old. French driving tests

You need to pass both the practical (épreuve pratique) and theory (épreuve théorique générale communal, or ETG) driving tests in order to obtain your driver's permit. It may also be necessary for prospective drivers with specific medical disorders or disabilities to undergo a medical examination with a licenced physician. The recommendation from the doctor is good for two years.

Only 59.2% of applicants pass the practical exam on their first attempt, indicating that French driving exams are highly challenging. It's interesting to note that in 2021, 62.5% of men and 54.4% of women obtained their driver's licences.

Driving theory test

The forty multiple-choice questions on the driving theory test, also referred to as the "Code," address traffic laws and road safety regulations.

The official Driving Instructions learning booklet is provided by your driving school, or you can get it from the French government website. Throughout your learning process, you have to keep this booklet in your automobile at all times.

When you're prepared, visit the websites of ANTS and La Poste, the French postal service, to arrange a time, date, and location for the exam.

At the testing facility, driving theory exams are administered digitally on tablets. The questions will be read out and displayed on the screen. You have about 30 minutes to complete the exam, and in order to pass, you need to accurately answer 35 questions. For instance, Le Permis Libre has sample questions available online.

In 48 hours, the results will be available online:

·         You have two days to retake the exam if you don't pass. The amount of times you can try is unlimited.

·         You have five years to take the practical test and obtain your driver's licence if you pass.

The standard theory test for driving in France costs €30.

Driving examinations with practical application in France

Once you have completed the required hours and passed your theory test, you are eligible to take the practical test, called la conduite. Your driving school will often schedule a practical test and cover the €30 cost on your behalf. On the ANTS website, you can also apply for the test on your own.

The driving school or the local prefecture will provide a car for the practical exam, which lasts about thirty minutes. The examiner, also known as the monitor, begins by verifying your identification, address, test invitation, and theory test results. Following that, you'll be evaluated on:

·         Driving the vehicle in accordance with the examiner's instructions

·         Apply the brakes, halt, and go into reverse.

·         Respond to inquiries concerning various auto parts, traffic safety, and elementary first aid.

The examiner will not report your performance to you afterwards. Instead, two to four days after the exam, you can check your results online. After passing, you or your driving school may ask to see your driving licence.

Driving lessons for an additional number of hours are advised if you fail the exam. There is no longer a cap on the number of times you can retake the driving exam; you can register to do so as soon as you feel prepared.

Using a foreign licence to drive in France

Visitors with a valid foreign permit are allowed to drive within the nation. If your driver's licence is not written in French and you are not from the EU/EEA (European Economic Area, which includes Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway), you need to provide an official translation with it.

If you have an EU/EEA licence and you relocate to France, you can continue to use it as long as it is valid (as long as it isn't revoked or suspended). After a year of stay, holders holding permits from outside the EU/EEA are required to exchange them for a French permit.

This law has one significant exception: you can use your foreign permit for the duration of your studies if you are in France on a student visa.

As soon as they apply for recognition, those who are protected by international law may swap their driver's licence for a French one. If their permit expired after they arrived in France, it is not even required to be valid.

French exchange of a foreign permission

You must swap your foreign driver's licence while it is still valid if you choose to or are required to. In the event that it has expired, you will essentially have to start over and complete the entire procedure of getting a French driver's licence.

There won't be much trouble, depending on your country of origin (in French). Applying for a swap is possible via the ANTS website. The following will need to be provided by you:

·         A front and rear photocopy of your original driver's licence

·         Evidence of Identity

·         Evidence of address (newer than six months)

·         A digital signature paired with an image code

·         A formal document from the issuing nation confirming your continued ability to drive

·         Verification of arrival, such as your boarding ticket, if you are from the EU

·         If you are not from the EU, including the UK, please provide documentation of your legal residency status (such as your residence card).

·         Any extra paperwork that's required

If a document is not issued in French, a certified translation must be sent with it.

Although it is free, the procedure of exchanging your international driver's licence can take many months. You may continue to drive with your own permission during that period.

Renewing a driver's licence in France (damaged)

Just use the ANTS website to obtain a new driving permit if your current one is damaged or has expired. You will have to supply:

·         Verification of identification

·         Evidence of address (newer than six months)

·         A picture ID (on paper or in digital format)

·         Your previous licence

You may occasionally be asked to submit to a medical examination.

The process of renewing is cost-free.
